Super Mario Galaxy Lives Up To All Expectations

As a child, I didn't have Nintendo's Wii system. Admittedly, I tried Wii Sports and other premier games while staying with family and friends in the mid-to-late 2000s, however I missed my personal Wii system, meaning I missed out on several excellent installments from Nintendo's beloved series.

A prime example featured Super Mario Galaxy, which, along with its sequel, has been freshly updated then adapted for Nintendo's hybrid system. The original game was also included within the 2020 special compilation Super Mario 3D All-Stars. I welcomed the chance to play viewed by fans as a top-tier Mario titles in history. The game rapidly captivated me, and I confidently state it matches almost twenty years of excitement. That said, it helped me understand how glad I am movement-based inputs mostly stayed as historical features.

The Cosmic Adventure Begins

Similar to most Mario quest, Super Mario Galaxy starts when Bowser kidnapping Princess Peach along with her castle. His collection of cosmic vessels take her among the stars, flinging Mario out amongst the stars in the process. Mario meets adorable stellar beings called Luma and meets Rosalina on her cosmic observatory. She tasks Mario with collecting stars to fuel the cosmic base enabling pursuit of the antagonist, then players gain freedom to start discovering.

The game's jumping mechanics provides delight, and all it took completing a few missions to understand why it’s held in such high regard. Players will notice similarities to anyone who’s played Mario's 3D adventures, and the mechanics are approachable and straightforward in typical Nintendo fashion.

Innovative Physics Mechanics

Being cosmic enthusiast, the setting is right up my alley, permitting Super Mario Galaxy to have fun with physics. Spherical platforms let Mario to run continuously surrounding them similar to Goku chasing after Bubbles on King Kai’s planet. When they’re close together, he can jump between them and get snatched by the gravity by neighboring objects. Different stages appear as discs, frequently containing collectibles below, in unexpected locations.

Revisiting Beloved Personalities

The pleasure in engaging with Galaxy after nearly two decades involves recognizing some of its characters. I was unaware Rosalina originated through this adventure, or that she acted as the caring guardian of the Lumas. Earlier in my gaming, to me she was just a standard member Mario Kart World character selection. Same with the Penguins, with whom I appreciated aquatic sections during an early beach level.

Motion Control Challenges

The main inconvenience during this adventure in 2025 concerns movement inputs, utilized during gathering, targeting, and firing stellar fragments, colorful objects found across galaxies. Playing on handheld mode involved moving and adjusting the console for targeting, proving slightly cumbersome. Movement features feature heavily within some platforming sections, requiring players to direct the cosmic indicator at surfaces to drag Mario toward them.

Levels that wholly require gyroscopic features work better when played with independent remotes improving control, like the manta ray surfing level during early game. I haven't typically been a fan of motion controls, and they remain especially well within this title. Luckily, by collecting sufficient stars from other levels, these motion control ones might be entirely bypassed. I tried the level requiring Mario guiding a massive orb around a course containing openings, then quickly abandoned following single try.

Enduring Gaming Quality

Aside from the cumbersome older motion controls, there's virtually nothing to dislike within this adventure, while its cosmic stages provide enjoyment to navigate. While impressive games like Super Mario Odyssey appeared subsequently, Super Mario Galaxy stays among the finest and creative Mario games around.
